How to fix USB thumb flash drives "write protected" error

Got new 4 PNY 32GB USB thumb drive. Since this is a new drive, I thought to format it before using it. But each and every time when I try to format it, my PC display the error message that it is “write protected”. Any help to fix this USB drive error message?

Try using Diskpart command line to fix USB flash drive “write protected” error. Below follow the steps on how to do it:

  • Click Start. Type cmd in search box and hit Enter key

  • Now type command diskpart and press Enter. A new command line window will pop-up.

  • Type list disk and press Enter. You can now see list of available disks in Windows. If your USB is not showing, then it is of no use.

  • If it is listed here, then note down the number displayed beside it. Now type SELECT DISK 1, assuming your USB drive is number 1 and press
  • After this Type attributes disk clear readonly and then press Enter
  • You have now cleared any Read-Only attribute that was available on the USB drive.

  • Finally type Exit and hit Enter

That’s All! You can now try your USB drive again without any error.
